In 1995, Karen Maurer started oil painting under the guidance of a contemporary American painter in the Russian Impressionism style (Don Sahli, last American apprentice to well-known Russian-American artist and teacher, Sergei Bongart).  After intense still-life studio and landscape study for several years, she incorporated figure drawing and painting with a teacher of the John Singer Sargent methods.  Her training has been enhanced through attending workshops in the Western United States and self study plein air and studio production.  She has participated in and won several art awards in juried exhibits, including an Evergreen (Colorado) Art Association Membership Show First Place and a Colorado Art Guild First Place.

Enthralled with the Western landscape in which she grew up and lived in all her life, Mrs. Maurer continually attempts to convey the grandeur in these surroundings while retaining a specific sense of place and a suggestion of general recognition in her landscape paintings.  Montana scenes provide continual sources of inspiration and challenge since relocating to the Flathead Lake region in 2004.  She paints out of doors (plein air) and in the studio, on the road and at home.  She enjoys still life painting during the long dark days of winter, and looks forward to the long light days of summer!

Guests and visitors are always welcome in the studio!  Call for more information.
